If they'd done a version which got into high gear quicker I bet the producers would have thought a lot harder about it.Ĭompare to Chris Cornell's superb " You Know My Name" which starts off by punching you in the face with a grunge version of the Bond main riff, is already in high year by 50 seconds in and is cranking the main chorus with full band by 1:05.Īgain, I think Spectre is a great song but I totally understand why they didn't use it. Up to there it's very whispy and almost feels like an extended introduction for the first couple of minutes. The song doesn't seriously kick off until 3:30ish and then again at 4:49ish, which is way too long for the opening credits of a Bond movie. Specifically, it takes too long to get to anything with a bit of drive to it. I think this is an A+ song, but I appear to be in the minority who can clearly see why they didn't use it. Here's a link to a Bond fan forum that has some more info, discussion, and a link to the BBC interview that Mendes did (though may no longer be available to stream). Such a shame too, Man of War could've been the perfect Bond theme. I understand the Bond producers being interested in an eligible song for the Academy Awards, but that was such an awful way to handle that.

Some observations about the Man of War recording from the OKNOTOK liner notes indicate that they used the same orchestra/conductor on it as the AMSP/Spectre sessions, and so must most likely be the version of the track they submitted for the Bond film. But the producers had asked Sam Smith if he'd be interested in the meantime, and by the time Radiohead came back with Spectre Sam Smith had already submitted his song and Writing's On The Wall had been chosen.Īpparently, Mendes still tried to work the song Spectre into a scene of the film but it overpowered whatever scene it was paired with. That's when Radiohead went off to write and record Spectre. One of the crew identifies that it's a song from the 90s (not an "original" song for the film, disqualifying it for an Oscar nom), and the producers opted to reject the song. So Sam Mendes (director) actually clarified: He got the producers on board for Radiohead, Radiohead recorded Man of War, and Man of War was actually the Bond theme for Spectre for a little less than a week. On the contrary, the band sound quite proud of Spectre! Nothing about that is implied as a consequence of doing Spectre, or that Spectre so thoroughly disrupted things that it splintered the band and left Nigel to do it all himself. What Nigel is describing in the blurb is just how the recording process here worked: the band wrote songs, recorded tracks, then Nigel mixed it all together.

Similar to how Jonny's looping software was the guiding/restraining principle on the TKOL sessions. Jonny had mentioned in either 2014 or 15, (I think well before Spectre was even known about) how limiting themselves to analog tape for the AMSP sessions was a deliberate choice to guide those recording sessions. Remember Radiohead TV? The webcasts? The plan to ditch the album format and just release new music as it's made, which lasted all of 2011? This is not a band renowned for sticking to a plan, lol.Īlso, I think you're misreading/mischaracterizing this part. Beyond just recording albums, I feel like Radiohead's history could probably be generally characterized as lacking focus, when you look at the number of side projects that have been proposed as the band's new thing and then dropped. Ok, well, I've followed them for a long time too, and I would argue that "lacking focus and needing to be herded" actually happens quite a lot in this band's history! Ed wrote about it in his Kid A diary for those sessions, the long gestation period for In Rainbows (exacerbated by lack of record label pressure, an aborted session period with a different producer), and so on.
